What the work looks like in Riverside South

Pool installs drive a lot of the concrete work in Riverside South, the same way they drive deck and shed removal. The pool company wants the patio, pads and any old footings gone before its dig date, so we schedule to that date and leave the area rough-graded.

Front-yard jobs are usually driveway and walkway replacements, often switching from asphalt or poured concrete to interlock. Lots are close together, so we protect the neighbour’s side, keep the sidewalk swept and request Ontario One Call locates before any ground work.

Most homes here were built from the late 1990s onward, so asbestos is rarely a concern for interior work. More about Riverside South

Permits & paperwork

Before work starts in Riverside South

Breaking out a patio, walkway, slab or driveway does not usually need a demolition permit, but it does need Ontario One Call locates before any ground work. We request them, and they take about five business days. Private lines, such as a feed to a garage, are not located by One Call, so tell us where they run.

Almost all of Riverside South was built after 1990, so a hazardous materials survey is rarely needed. For renovation work, your building permit is usually the main paperwork.

Any building from before 1990 gets a hazardous materials survey first. If it finds asbestos or other designated substances, abatement is referred to licensed specialists, and our crew starts after the clearance letter.

Disposal

Torn out. Hauled out.

Every job ends ready for the next trade. Here is where the debris goes.

Clean concrete, brick and asphalt are kept separate from soil and garbage so they can go to aggregate recycling, where they are crushed for reuse. Rebar and mesh are cut out for scrap.

On larger jobs, a roll-off bin from a licensed bin company sits on your property, and the bin company hauls it away and handles the tipping at its own facility.

On smaller jobs our crew loads our own trucks and hauls to the Tomlinson Waste Recovery Centre at 106 Westhunt Drive in Carp, which sorts mixed construction and demolition debris for recycling and accepts commercial loads.

Most Riverside South jobs are small enough to load straight to our trucks, so no bin sits on your driveway for a week.

Asbestos & permits

We don’t touch asbestos. That’s the point.

Some demolition companies will tell you they do it all. We do the demolition, and we make sure the steps before it happen in the right order, by the right people: survey first, licensed abatement, then us.

Read the asbestos and permit FAQ
  1. Built before 1990? Ontario law puts the onus on the owner to identify designated substances before a contract is signed. That means a designated-substances survey.
  2. Survey finds asbestos? A licensed abatement contractor removes it, and you get a clearance letter.
  3. Utilities and permit. Gas, hydro, water and sewer disconnected where needed. Enbridge alone takes about 44 days, so it gets requested first.
  4. Then we demolish. No change orders for surprise asbestos, no stop-work orders, no crew exposed.

FAQ

Concrete & asphalt removal in Riverside South: questions

Can you be done before my pool company digs?

Yes. Give us the dig date when you book the site visit and we schedule the break-out ahead of it.

Do you call for locates?

Yes, before any ground work. Ontario One Call locates take about five business days. Private lines, such as a feed to a shed or hot tub, are not located, so show us where they run.

How deep do you remove?

To the depth in the quote. Most patios and driveways come out with the surface layer, and the base is left for your landscaper unless they want it gone too.

Do you remove decks ahead of pool installs?

Yes. Give us the pool company’s dig date and we clear the deck, shed and pads before it.
