What the work looks like in Centretown

Centretown has a lot of rental units, from converted brick houses to low-rise apartments and condo towers, and landlords turning units over between tenants are regular customers. We clear what the last tenant left, from furniture and mattresses to bags in the storage locker, so the unit is ready for cleaning and painting.

In condo and apartment buildings, the elevator, loading area and permitted hours are booked with the building before we arrive. In converted houses with narrow stairs, everything comes down by hand, and the truck is in front of the building for as short a time as possible.

Centretown’s residential streets are dominated by red-brick houses, row houses and low-rise apartments built between 1890 and 1914, many later divided into apartments. More about Centretown

Permits & paperwork

Before work starts in Centretown

Junk removal needs no permit. If a bin has to go on the street rather than your driveway, the City requires a temporary encroachment permit, so we load to our trucks or keep bins on private property.

Much of Centretown is in the Centretown Heritage Conservation District. Interior work usually proceeds normally, but anything visible from outside needs heritage review. Commercial debris cannot go to the City’s Trail Road landfill (City memo).

Permit, utility and timeline FAQ

Disposal

Torn out. Hauled out.

Every job ends ready for the next trade. Here is where the debris goes.

Usable furniture is set aside for donation when you ask; metal, appliances and electronics go to recycling; and the rest goes to a licensed sorting facility. Paint, fuel, propane and chemicals go to the City’s household hazardous waste events instead.

On larger jobs, a roll-off bin from a licensed bin company sits on your property, and the bin company hauls it away and handles the tipping at its own facility.

On smaller jobs our crew loads our own trucks and hauls to the Tomlinson Waste Recovery Centre at 106 Westhunt Drive in Carp, which sorts mixed construction and demolition debris for recycling and accepts commercial loads.

Downtown loading is planned around docks, freight elevators and permitted hours. Where a truck or bin has to use the street, the City requires a temporary encroachment permit.

What’s included

  • Price from your photos, confirmed on site before anything is lifted
  • All loading by our crew, from basement, attic, garage or back yard
  • Donation, recycling and sorting instead of straight-to-landfill
  • Sweep-up of the area we cleared

What goes elsewhere

  • Hazardous waste: paint, propane tanks, fuel, oil, chemicals and pesticides. These go to the City’s household hazardous waste depot
  • Anything suspected to contain asbestos, such as vermiculite insulation, old pipe wrap or 9×9 floor tiles
  • Medical waste and ammunition

FAQ

Junk removal in Centretown: questions

Can you work with my property manager?

Yes. We arrange access, elevator bookings and hours with the property manager or superintendent.

Do you take mattresses and box springs?

Yes, priced per piece. They go to a facility that diverts them from landfill.

Can you remove office furniture from an upper floor?

Yes. Send photos with the floor and elevator details, and we book the freight elevator with the building.

Do you work after hours downtown?

Yes. Occupied office buildings usually require noisy work in the evening or on weekends, and we schedule to the building’s rules.
